I mentioned a “pay for performance” model that CMS is trying out for Home Health Agencies. Well, an AHRQ study published in the British Medical Journal explored ways in which data were collected and used in Nursing Homes as a result of participation in a pay-for-performance program. Interviews were conducted with 232 employees from 70 nursing homes that participated in pay-for-performance-sponsored quality improvement projects. The study and abstract, “Pay-for-Performance Policy and Data-Driven Decision making Within Nursing Homes,” appeared in BMJ online March 6. Personally, I’m trying to figure out how nursing homes are going to accomplish pay for performance programs without electronic health records.
When Nursing Homes DO get EHRs, I hope they will be better suited to wound care documentation than any of the hospital EHRs I’ve seen.
