Attention Hyperbaric Medicine Colleagues, especially those in New Jersey, Michigan and Illinois! Please read the important note below from UHMS Executive Director, John Peters.

Dear Hyperbaric Medicine Practitioner,
The Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) recently received a request from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) for feedback on the Prior Authorization project for non-emergent HBO2 in NJ, MI and IL.  The GAO is conducting an engagement focused on Medicare prior authorization and pre-claim review demonstrations. They want to speak with representatives of the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society and our physician members to gain our perspective on Medicare’s non-emergent HBO2 demonstration—what’s working well and what could be improved. To cast the net wider, we’re including all practitioners billing 99183 in these same states.
As background (from their website https://www.gao.gov/about/), the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) is an independent, nonpartisan agency that works for Congress. Often called the “congressional watchdog,” GAO investigates how the federal government spends taxpayer dollars. Part of their mandate is,

  • reporting on how well government programs and policies are meeting their objectives;
  • and performing policy analyses and outlining options for congressional consideration.

The GAO is interested in feedback from clinicians on the impact of the PA project on them and their patients. This is an unparalleled opportunity to have input into the process of the evaluation of the prior authorization project and the impact it has had on the provision of HBO2 in the three states. The UHMS’s Quality, Utilization, Authorization and Reimbursement Committee (QUARC) is requesting that physicians who have has experience with prior authorization contact John Peters (jpeters@uhms.org) to share their experiences, and participate in a conference call with the UHMS and GAO. Date and time to be scheduled but this is a time sensitive request.
If you’re interested in participating, please contact us immediately.
Thank you!
Regards,
John
