Dr. Fife,

Recently I was interviewing a WOCN nurse for an inpatient wound care position. The nurse told me that at her previous hospital, she performed bedside surgical wound debridements in hospitalized patients (e.g., 11042) and reported the CPT code to be included in the productivity report of the hospital admission.

At our institution, physicians perform all the bedside debridements in hospitalized patients, so I was surprised to hear of an RN being allowed to do them. I do not think our institution would ever allow RNs to perform surgical debridements for codes 11042, 11043 and 11044, but I am curious if other hospitals are allowing this.

 Regards,
