I know there is “MIPS” fatigue and that for most wound care practitioners, the whole Quality Payment Program has felt irrelevant. However, this year, if you are “eligible” to report (that’s Medicare’s term for “you have to do it”) and fail to do anything about it, you will lose 9% of your Medicare fee for service payments. (Note that the penalty for 2024 will actually occur in 2026 because there is a two-year lag on both penalty and bonus payments.) If you are working in an office-based setting, it is likely that you are eligible to report. The COVID exemptions have expired.

This blog post sums up what I understand overall about the QPP.

At the very least, every practitioner should put their NPI into Medicare’s “Look up” tool to check their status. Note that you need to pick the year you are interested in because status can change from year to year but check 2023 because right now, MIPS 2023 Data Submission is open until April 1, 2024, at 8:00 p.m. ET.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) opened data submission for Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) eligible clinicians who participated in the 2023 performance year of the Quality Payment Program (QPP). Data can be submitted and updated until 8:00 p.m. ET on April 1, 2024.

How to Submit and Review Your 2023 MIPS Data

Follow the steps below to submit data:

  1. Go to the Quality Payment Program sign in page.
  2. Sign in using your QPP access credentials.
  3. Submit your MIPS data for the 2023 performance year or review the data reported on your behalf by a third party. You can’t correct errors with your data after the submission period, so it’s important to make sure the data submitted on your behalf is accurate.

The following submission resources are available on the QPP Resource Library:

How to Sign In to the QPP Data Submission System

To sign in and submit data, clinicians will need a HCQIS Authorization Roles and Profile (HARP) account and a QPP role. For help enrolling with HARP, please refer to “Step 1. Register for a HARP Account” in the Quality Payment Program Access User Guide (ZIP, 3MB). For help obtaining a QPP role, please refer to “Step 2. Connect to an Organization” in the Quality Payment Program Access User Guide (ZIP, 3MB).
