This Modern Healthcare article from 2/26 is behind a paywall, but I am posting the link anyway. The article reports that earlier in February, a federal judge “partially advanced a potential class action lawsuit against UnitedHealth Group and its UnitedHealthcare insurance unit over their alleged use of artificial intelligence to deny post-acute care for some Medicare Advantage members.” United, Humana and Cigna are all using these automated processes and have seen lawsuits filed against them. The article states that insurers deny allegations that “they’ve used technology to deny patients the care recommended by physicians,” and in fact are “investing in greater adoption of AI and other automation tools, which they say make workflows more efficient and create better experiences for members and providers.”
