Dr. Fife,

Thank you for the wonderful blog post by Drs. Melin and team: “Wrestling Armadillos”. I could not agree more on all points! I want to emphasize this statement:

“…’the underlying reason for chronic wounds may be systemic’, a brilliant yet simplistic call to action to maintain intellectual curiosity with every patient as we interact with and holistically treat patients with long suffering from chronic disfiguring wounds. And please, touch your patients; their healing and recovery depends upon it.”

As an aside, I am beyond impressed that a 90-ish-year-old man was fit enough to wrestle an armadillo!

It’s probably worth pointing out that there’s a genetic component to leprosy susceptibility and fortunately, 95% of persons appear to have natural resistance (Alter  A, Grant  A, Abel  L, Alcais  A, Schurr  E. Leprosy as a genetic disease. Mamm Genome. 2011;22:19–31. PMID: 20936290). I am also grateful the 9-banded armadillo appears to be the only reservoir for M. leprae.

Thank you for continuing to educate so many of us and thank you to the Drs. Melin for this fascinating post!

Sincerely,
Elsa Englund Kayuha MD, Director of Medical Affairs, RenovoDerm
